Bulul6

47 Seated pair of bululs from Banaue district, the male 49.5 cm high and female 45.4 cm, carved from nara wood, each with a hole on top of the head for rice offerings or hair peg. These bululs came from Nabyon village, in Amganad bario, in Banaue district, Ifugao province. They were said to be carved by Bognadon before WW2. Certified as cultural properties by the National Museum of the Philippines, October 2003, with stamps 0084805 and 0084806 and an estimated date of 1920-1950. The National Museum curator for anthropology agreed with the attribution to Bognadon.

These are the only bulul statues I have seen that express emotions and character, and that is conveyed with just a few simple lines, the mark of a truly talented artist. The man's expression is happy, self-confident, and probably a little malibog; while his wife's expression is rather worried and apprehensive, as if to say "Honey, don't you think we have enough kids already?"
