Bulul 06

9 Dancing bulul from Kiangan, 67 cm high, with arms outstretched and 63 cm across. From Kiangan district of Ifugao province. Certified as a cultural property by the National Museum of the Philippines, with stamp 0065838 and an estimated date of circa 1930. This type of dancing bulul is "quite rare, it is much sought after and quite expensive" (Arts of Asia, Nov/Dec 1989, p. 147). Dancing bululs were originally used by local shamans for magic ceremonies. Some believe this style of bulul was inspired by Christian images of the crucifixion.
