Bulul 70

70 Large seated male bulul in the Bunney style, 73 cm high. The style of carving is rather angular, almost cubist. It has a concave, heart-shaped face, typical of the Bunney style in central Ifugao (see Anderson, Indigenous Art of the Northern Philippines, 2010, figures 103 to 111). The face has a strong, tough and alert expression, befitting a spirit presence that has to protect the rice granary and household. There is significant blood encrustation concentrated on top of the head and face and on the upper body and arms, diminishing towards the base. I bought this in 2004 and it was never examined by the National Museum, since I left the Philippines soon afterwards.
